Aussie sheilas doing it for themselves, oi, oi, not so oi?
A lot of noise if being made over a recent Australian study that showed that post-2002 HRT scares, Aussie women moved away from Rx HRT in droves. And where did they go? Well some of them decided to look at alternative means including BHRT to deal with their menopausal symptoms.
Apparently, in 2004, 15.8% of women above the age of 50 years were using HRT, down from 22% in 2000. Use of alternative therapies was “rare”. And now in 2008, HRT has dropped even further to only 11.8%. with alternatives now at 4%. S
So from 2000 to 2008 HRT has lost a market share of 9.2% and alternative remedies, including BHRT, has gained 4%. Presumably leaving a market share of 6.2% to fight over.
And how is the fight playing out? Maybe not as “clean” as we would like. According to the study leader, Professor Alastair MacLennan, “Few of those who buy these expensive products understand what they are taking, the relative lack of regulatory protection, and the potential for them to be misinformed, mistreated and misused.” Could not the same be said of HRT?
