May is Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month
While menopause does not own Osteoporosis as an issue, women with low estrogen counts usually have low bone mass density which means fractures and breaks are on the cards if you are not careful.
If you want to know if it can happen to you, you can download this handy assessment card or you can use this tool.
If you want to know how to prevent it, it’s simple:
- Get your daily recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.
Some points to note about Calcium. Women have different needs to men. Calcium supplements are not all the same and you need to make sure you take the right type. Also you need other vitamins and minerals to properly absorb Calcium.
Some points to note about weight bearing exercising. Swimming is the worst form of exercise for this purpose and walking is not much better. While running is OK it has its drawbacks. Literally lifting weights is the way to go. If you have to choose between cardio and weights, choose weights. In addition, exercise that improves your balance is also going to be a great aid in fracture prevention. So taking up Yoga or Tai Chi is a good idea.
