I have just turned 53 and for two years I struggled with heavy and prolonged periods. This bleeding lead to an interruption of day-to-day activities, very low iron stores and eventually anemia and aching muscles.

Constant weariness caused by continual bleeding and "flooding" and having to wear pads all the time was not my idea of fun.

In November last year I was fitted with a Mirena IUD. The result was instant reduction in menstrual flow and a corresponding increase in my iron levels. MAGIC !

The first 5 mths I experienced some minimal spotting throughout the month (which the Dr told me to expect and was totally normal).

My period now consists of 3 to 4 days of scant flow and the need to wear only a panty liner.

From my experience I would highly recommend Mirena for controlling heavy bleeding in peri-menopause
