Will you, won’t you use HRT?
There is quite a deal of criticism emerging about the finding of the WHI published in 2002. The outcome of that study was a severe reduction in HRT usage based on the risk associated with breast cancer and cardiovascular disease and stroke. Many now feel that view may have been skewed due to a number of factors.
One aspect related to that is the age of the subjects. As reported in the Washington Post, the age of women involved was over 65 – an age when they were well and truly past menopause. They report there are new trials (ELITE and KEEPS) focusing B/HRT’s effect on cardiovascular disease in women who have recently reached menopause as well as women 10 years past that milestone. Of course it will be many years before we know the outcome if indeed any clear outcome is derived. However simply doing the trials, re-opens the doors for HRT as well as supports the recent trend for BHRT.
