How inept do they BeLieve we are?

By Hot Flash

Breast self examinations are considered a good thing. Done once a month around the third day of your period is good timing.  And the really good thing is that this is something woman can do for themselves.  No medical intervention or equipment necessary.

Of course, that has not stopped some company from trying to make money off it.  BeMitt – BeSmart, BeSensible, BeSure?  Sorry it’s more like BeMused, Bothered and BeWildered!

    Me again!

There is a lot of information on the internet on how to do this and of course women can always ask their doctors how.

The American Cancer Society shows one method http://tinyurl.com/7y8muc

(hot-flash: Lynette, thanks. We had to “tiny” that URL to get it to display properly)

  2. Do we “need” a tool to perform monthly breast self-exam? The answer is no, but for some, a tool can it make the task at hand easier to perform, serve as a constant reminder each month and for some who are of modest cultures make it a bit more clinical in nature. Why you chose to single out the BeMitt in your negative blog is really beyond me as there are several products on the market, similar to ours and each serves a unique purpose. As people choose different brands of pain relievers, shampoo, deodorant, etc, should they not have a choice on what method of BSE is best suited for them? The bottom line is to educate ones self on the importance of BSE and how getting to know the feel of your own breast tissue is key to early detection of potential problems. Whether you choose to use the BeMitt, another product, your bare hand, soap & water, etc is a personal preference with the bottom line being DO BSE TO GET TO KNOW YOUR BREASTS! As far as trying to “make money off it”, a great portion of the proceeds from BeMitt sales goes right back into the community through BSE seminars/workshops which are offered FREE to women’s groups, college classes, church groups and teenagers.

I would love the opportunity and would welcome the opportunity to discuss the issue at hand, personally.

  3. We’re glad you agree that women do not need more than their own hands to examine their own breasts.

  6. Hi All,

I had the opportunity to learn a bit about the Breastlight at the recent ACOG meeting. It operates much on the same premise as thermal scans whereby when the red light is shown through the breast tissue, you can see any heavy accumulation of vessels or shadows which can indicate a potentential problem. Very clever, but also very costly. Again, in a field where you want women to be “breast aware”, I say if it encourages you to be proactive, go for it. Different strokes for different folks!

  7. Just to clarify, according to their site, the Breast Light costs GBP 77.50 which is roughly USD 130.

  8. I contacted the Breast Light people to find out exactly what light spectrum they used. Their response was it is a “red light”.

  9. The Breast Light people got back to me again and said that the wavelength used is 630nm. It is certified as a Class 1 LED Product under IEC/EN 60825-1 (2001).

Looking at their case studies, it does not seem to able to detect small lumps. Anything under 1.5cm seems to get missed. According to data released from the Breast Health Program of New York, women who do regular breast self-exams can detect lumps of this size with their hands. Only a mammogram can do better.
