British women in denial about menopause?
A recent “survey” found that British women are pretty daft when it comes to menopause.
According to Medical New Today, the survey revealed that “a staggering one in ten women are unaware that the menopause is a naturally occurring event affecting all women as they enter midlife. Of those, a surprising 70% thought that the menopause was genetic and almost 10% thought it occurred as a result of general ill health”.
But should we be rubbishing our sisters over the pond like this? I don’t think so. More like the survey author needs a good bollocking for writing anything based on what sounds like a poorly developed TickBox Survey and then calling it “research” in a thinly guised attempt to promote their HRT products.
If you look at what it actually says, the survey was done in April 2008 using TickBox an online site where you can sign up to do surveys and win prizes. The article states that of the 1,158 female UK residents who participated, 25% were between 25-35 and 75% were over 35 years. In all, only 43% of respondents were either in the early stages, going through or post the menopause.
Let’s face it. Women 25 to 35 are not interested in knowing anything about menopause. They are still interested in childbirth. And they don’t know much about that either until they actually get pregnant and then they find out. Just like menopause. When they need to find out about menopause they will.
But let’s look at the actual reported results:
- ”a staggering one in ten women are unaware that the menopause is a naturally occurring event affecting all women as they enter midlife. “
Staggering? 1 in 10 is only 10%. 10% is 115 women. How old were they?
- ”Of those, a surprising 70% thought that the menopause was genetic”.
It would be interesting to see the actual question. Because we’ve been told time and time again that the age you reach menopause is genetic given it is based on the age your mother did. But again 70% of 115 is only 80 women which is 6 % in the overall survey. This means a whopping 94% of women knew it was not.
- ”almost 10% thought it occurred as a result of general ill health”
That is 10% of 10% which is 1% of the total. 1% thought this. 11 women. Hardly earth shattering. They probably don’t know how babies are born either. But luckily they do know how to sign up for surveys to win prizes.
HRT anyone? We now know which product NOT to use.
