Menopause is now a Style and Fashion Issue
According to Camille Sweeny reporting on Style and Fashion at the New York Times, you can lose 20lbs in 4 months by taking Estroven (site link usefully included).
Well Camille did not actually say so, her partly named source Martha B said so. And so it must be true. No doubt sales will soar.
Camille was actually supposed to be reporting on natural remedies for hot flashes. And Estroven is supposed to get rid of them. Well, it worked for Martha B. (We might be forgiven for concluding that hot flashes, like estrogen, are stored in fat since no explanation as to why is given it worked.)
Interestingly, out of the 500 odd products that according to Camille are on the market to treat hot flashes this one was the only one mentioned (site link usefully included).
And why was she writing about hot flashes in the first place? Well if you wade thru the random quotes from random people (hello Dr. Cutler, thanks for not implying that women of a certain age seeking natural remedies are by definition clueless) and get to the third last paragraph you find that someone is doing yet another study on the efficacy of Red Clover and Black Cohosh due out in the Fall.
Camille thinks that even if the study reveals that supplements are effective then “women may still find themselves confused when they are about to reach for something off the shelf. “ Why? You need to work that out yourself. The clue is in the sawdust.
