When the cure is worse than the invented disease

Fosomax, a bisphosphonate based drug touted as being better than simple diet and exercise in combating osteoporosis,  is under fire following recent reports linking it to femur fractures after long term use. ABC News broke the story that has sparked interest.

Doctors are now concerned that usage longer than 5 years can pose a risk. However the FDA is giving a “don’t panic” message saying there is no proof and that they will investigate.  This despite preliminaries results of two new studies that indicate that while bisphosphonate drugs perform better than calcium+Vitamin D supplements in the short term after 4 years the trend reverses.

There are already group action law suits over Fosomax’s link to jaw fractures. 

Users are urged to keep taking it.

Yet one question out there is do we really need to be taking it at all?  

And a new look at the whole issue by indicates maybe not …
